Repair of 2005, Martin DX1 left hand, 6 string western guitar. |
The guitar has been dropped, so it has a serious injury on the side of the body, there are cracks in the high pressure laminate. Furthermore, the guitar is very dry on the fretboard and the fretboard must have oil treatment. |
The damage is not easy to spot on the inside of the body, but the weak shadow disclose that there has been felt after with a finger. |
The material body is made of, "High-pressure laminate" it is the same product used in the manufacture of laminate sheets for kitchen countertops. It is largely impossible to repair. |
Fretboard and bridge needs a refreshing oil treatment. |
Then the oil treatment done, it was the routine part of the repair. The Laminate injury requires a lot of think work. |
I have been a trip to the pharmacy to buy a scalpel (surgical knife). The edges of the fracture is cut so clean that, the piece that is clamped into the body just can be pressed back into place. |
There are lubricated epoxy adhesive to the edges, and 2 scalpel blade is used to tilt the fracture out into place. |
When there was no possibility to squeeze inside the body, so this method is applied, a little alternative, but it was the best I could come up with. |
Inside the body, it is seen now clearly where the break is. |
The break is now reinforced with a piece of glass cloth embedded in epoxy glue. It was not easy to get in place, and as you see, I have also tried a couple of times. |
Now, we need a little repainting, so the repair is completed. |
Not the great art (painting has never just been me), but it's probably the best I can do. |
The guitar is repaired, oiled and strung with new Martin strings, and ready to get on road again. |
